Use a slip cradle to antifoul
your hull out of the water

You don’t need a trailer or a marina to clean your boat hull

Summary

Is a mobile slip cradle better than a trailer for antifouling?

Just look at the access you get to the hull of your boat – a boat cradle is the perfect way to clean or paint your boat hull as you get amazing access all the way around compared to a normal boat trailer. It makes all those difficult jobs like anti fouling so much easier to accomplish while it is on a cradle.

Why do you need to antifoul your boat?

Antifouling a boat is the process of using specifically designed devices and coatings to remove or prevent biofouling. Antifouling is normally associated with using a paint that is a chemical treatment that’s applied to a hull to make the surface uninhabitable (or at least very undesirable) for aquatic organisms while your boat is in the water. It can make sure there is a reduced amount of build up of garbage on your hull to help maintain performance.

To do the antifouling you have to pull your boat out of the water, so the first thing you have to work out is where or how you will do it. If you own a boat trailer then of course for most cases you can pull the boat out of the water yourself. Then the boat can stay on the trailer to try and do the antifouling. Although if you don’t have a trailer what are your options? You could take it to a marina but that will cost a fortune in lifting and storage fees.

The other option is to rent a mobile slip cradle that the boat can be stored on so you can have access to it while it is out of the water. A boat cradle can hold different boats and some people might build their own boat cradle out of timber, especially for smaller boats. Although for larger boats it is too hard to build your own boat cradle and also a potential safety issue unless you are a qualified engineer with all the necessary equipment. That is why we rent our mobile boat cradles so that people don’t need to go to the hassle of building their own.

Our slip cradles give you much better access to the entire length of the hull compared to a normal trailer so that is why we don’t recommend trying to anitfoul a large boat on a trailer.  I talk to lots of boat owners who are always surprised once the hull is clean and has been correctly treated with antifouling, they often talk about how well their boat performs for things like fuel consumption. Although it is important to use an experienced contractor that will know what the best product is for your boat depending on what the hull is made of, the type of boating you do, and the conditions where it’s kept. Finding someone with local knowledge is always the best bet.

Getting your boat out of the water at a boat ramp is cheaper and easier than trying to do it at a marina or doing it yourself.

Bottom paint (aka antifouling paint) is a paint or coating designed to discourage weeds, barnacles, and other aquatic organisms from attaching themselves to (and in the case of wooden boats, eating) the underwater portion of your boat’s hull. So typically it is recommended to have your boat given an antifoul treatment every 9-15 months, depending on how frequently the boat is used, where it lives and how harsh the environment is for your area.

In between those times you might also want to scrub/polish or hose off everything below the waterline, including things like the running gear, anodes and any other bits down there. Some antifoul paints are ‘soft’ ablative coatings, so be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on whether scrubbing/polishing is advised, or even necessary.
